Recovery & Healing
Recovery Defined
Recovery can be defined as a personal process of tackling the adverse impacts of experiencing mental health problems, despite their continuing or long term presence.
It involves personal development and change, including:
- acceptance that there are problems to face
- developing a sense of involvement and control over one’s life
- cultivating hope
- using the support from others, including direct collaboration in joint problem solving between people using services, workers and professionals.
Recovery starts with the individual and works from the inside out.

Quotes from "The Windhorse Principles"
Inherent in every person there is a natural healing impulse – a motivation towards health and wholeness.
This motivation can be ignited and strengthened in an environment where an attitude of hope and a belief in each person’s potential for growth is pervasive.
At the heart of an individual’s recovery from mental disorder is the restoration of personal, social, and environmental connections.
The meaning of recovery is unique to each person.
